use math as your superpower!

Black Girls Love Math eliminates racial and gender inequality in mathematics. Through culturally responsive teaching practices, we cultivate a positive math identity for our girls. BGLM provides enrichment, mentoring and a community for Black girls to embrace math as a tool for empowerment.

Black Girls Love Math will exponentially increase the number of Black girls in Advanced Placement math classes and math focused college majors.

Our Mission

STEM workforce consists of women, and of these women, less than 10% are BIPOC. Black, Latina, and Indigenous women are especially underrepresented in STEM fields, particularly in the engineering, life sciences, and computer science workforce.

Our Vision

“Black Girls Love Math (BGLM) is committed to cultivating a safe space for girls to develop a positive math identity. We are disrupting the system that limits opportunity to Black girls who love math.”

A Letter From Our Executive Director

IMG_0576 (1).jpg

Dear BGLM Friends and Supporters,

As Founder and Executive Director of Black Girls Love Math, I am excited to share our first 5 years (2020-2025) impact and story. Our first 5 years have ignited a mission we’re more passionate about today as I was December 2019 when BGLM lived in my iPad notes. Since our founding, we’ve seen impact with our girls across diverse regions, schools and communities. Black Girls Love Math has 1 core belief:

Black girls are math people too and belong in all STEM spaces.

This belief has allowed us to serve over 250 girls in 5 cities, lead teacher development for over 100 educators, inspire families, educators and communities alike…and the mission just launched!

While students served and impacted are mission critical, I am most proud and inspired by the BGLM community we’ve created. A community that believes in the power of Black girls in STEM spaces. A cheer section of advocates, teachers, families, STEM professionals and donors that too believe that Black girls belong in the STEM space. The affirmation that Black girls are math people!

Our first 5 years was the launch of our mission, propelling girls' math confidence and STEM identities. Our next 5 years will multiply the STEM landscape through program expansion, deepening mentoring and career exploration that prepares our girls to be future ready. Our informal learning spaces coupled with mentorship and career exploration show what’s possible in STEM careers and opportunities for girls who have not always been included in the equation.

We welcome you to join us on our mission as we launch into 2026 and beyond. Join us to “See Her in STEM”

With our continued growth and expansion, we will reach our mission and increase the number of Black women in STEM careers from 2% to 8% by 2035.

Thank you for being a part of the solution.

With gratitude,

Atiyah Harmon

Founder and Executive Director
