Our Story

Black Girls Love Math was founded in 2020 from a need identified by founder and math lover, Atiyah Harmon. She recognized that not only were Black girls severely underrepresented in the STEM field, but girls in schools also weren’t excelling in math for several reasons including math identity and underrepresentation . Harmon created a curriculum to teach math differently, to honor the girls' thinking and problem-solving capabilities

The development of Black Girls Love Math centers on the belief that a positive identity and growth mindset for girls that identify as Black will lead to positive outcomes in achievement and overall identity.

BGLM's program offers after school enrichment, Saturday workshops , college preparation, career exploration and math competitions.Typically, one teacher works with 15 students, and every lesson begins with an affirmation creed talking about a SHE-RO of the week, usually a Black or Brown women currently working in STEM. The She-Ro of the week answers the question “Why do I need to learn math?” and also allows our girls to see themselves represented in STEM.
